GATE 2020 examination was conducted by IIT Delhi in February 2020. Arnob Samui secured AIR-3 in MT paper. He has completed B-Tech in Material Science & Metallurgical Engineering from National Institute Of Technology, Raipur. This was his second attempt. Achieving Top rank in the GATE examination is no small feat and needed much of hard work and preparation strategy. The future Aspirants can take much of learning from GATE 2020 MT Topper Arnob Samui. AskMeMetallurgy- What is your name and Where have you done your engineering from?
Arnob Samui- My name is Arnob Samui, BTech (NIT Raipur).
AskMeMetallurgy- What rank did you get in GATE 2020? What is your GATE score and how many marks did you secure?
Arnob Samui- I secured AIR 3 in GATE 2020 and my GATE score is 922/1000 with 81/100 marks.
AskMeMetallurgy- Is this your first attempt or did you attempt GATE earlier?
Arnob Samui- No, This was not my first attempt.
AskMeMetallurgy- When did you start preparation for GATE 2020?
Arnob Samui- I couldn’t prepare well this year because of some personal reasons. I started nearly a week before gate paper. But I had my self prepared notes which took me 2-3 days to revise 70-80% syllabus.
AskMeMetallurgy- How was the GATE 2020 MT paper?
Arnob Samui- 1 marks theory questions were little difficult for me, NAT and match type questions were very easy. But this paper was difficult than 2019 paper.
AskMeMetallurgy- Have you taken any coaching or Online Mock Tests? How did it help?
Arnob Samui- No coaching, no mock test. I solved gate papers from 2010-2019 as test series.
AskMeMetallurgy- Which books did you follow for GATE preparation? Please name some very important must read books for GATE.
Arnob Samui- One should follow standard text books like-
- Thermodynamics – Gaskell, Upadhyay, A. Ghosh
- Material science- V. Raghvan(material sci), callister, Vijendra Singh
- Physical metallurgy – V. Raghvan(phy meta), Vijendra Singh
- Ferrous extractive- A. Ghosh, Tupkary
- Non ferrous – HS Ray+ nptl(numericals)
- Welding+casting- PN Rao
- Mechanical meta+ Manufacturing – George E Dieter
- Maths- BS Grewal
- Corrosion – Fontana
- Transport phenomena – AK Mohanty, Gaskell
- Phase Transformation – V Raghvan.
AskMeMetallurgy- What is your style of preparation and notes making?
Arnob Samui- When I was preparing for gate’19, I used to read books and prepare notes, separate notebook for formula as well. This year, my self made notes helped me revise 70-80% syllabus in a quick time. Then I started previous year papers as test series. It really boosts speed & accuracy. One should thoroughly read text books , as it’s content can be remembered after 1-2 years as well. Then start solve previous year papers for numericals as well as for untouched topics. Then appear for test series.
AskMeMetallurgy- What is the important topic that should be specially focused by the GATE Aspirants?
Arnob Samui- NATs mostly decide rank nowadays. So one should solve as many numericals as he/she can.
AskMeMetallurgy- Can you elaborate your daily timetable (When will you wake up, study, sleep etc) .
Arnob Samui- 7-8 hours sleep daily, 5-6 hours study. Difficult to maintain a proper timetable in job life.
