GATE 2021 examination was conducted by IIT Bombay in February 2021. B. Vinith secured AIR-1 in MT paper. He has completed B-Tech in Material Science & Metallurgical Engineering from National Institute Of Technology, Raipur in 2019. Currently, He is pursuing his M-Tech (1st year) in Material science in IIT BOMBAY. This was his third attempt. Achieving Top rank in the GATE examination is no small feat and needed much of hard work and preparation strategy. The future Aspirants can take much of learning from GATE 2021 MT Topper B. Vinith. Here is an awesome interview with him.
AskMeMetallurgy: Please, accept our heartiest congratulations on your splendid success. First of all, we would like to know about Vinith. Please introduce yourself.
Vinith: I am B.vinith. I have done my B-Tech in metallurgical engineering from NIT Raipur in 2019. I am the gold medalist of my batch. Currently i am pursuing my M-Tech 1st year in material science in IIT BOMBAY.
AskMeMetallurgy: What rank did you get in GATE 2021? What is your GATE score and how many marks did you secure?
Vinith: My rank is AIR 1, GATE score 923, Marks- 87.67.
AskMeMetallurgy: Is this your first attempt or did you attempt GATE earlier?
Vinith: This is my 3rd attempt, In my 1st attempt i got AIR- 250, second i got AIR- 56 and now AIR-1.
AskMeMetallurgy: How was the GATE 2021 MT paper?
Vinith: According to me, the paper is of moderate level as it contains lot of numerical so your accuracy will matter a lot that’s why I am not calling it is easy but it is relatively easier compared to GATE 2020.
AskMeMetallurgy: You said it was your third attempt. So how did you reached from AIR-250 to AIR-1? Please tell in details what had you mistaken and then improved in next attempt?
Vinith: So, i took an year drop to practice numerical and build the concepts. My mistake in the first time was i focused more on theory part but i skipped numerical. Then in the drop period i improved my accuracy and numerical solving ability. On my third attempt my accuracy was 100% so, i tried to improve my speed. So, finally getting a decent rank in a gate is a combination of accuracy + concept+ speed of your thinking/solving.
AskMeMetallurgy: when did you start preparation for GATE 2021?
Vinith: I started just a week ago. I know that my concepts are strong and i am also confident in my numerical ability because i solved a lot of assignments in IIT Bombay. so, my only concern was about revising the formulas and avoiding silly mistakes. I overcome this by solving previous year papers.
AskMeMetallurgy: Have you taken any coaching or Online Mock Tests? How did it help?
Vinith: Yes, I have taken Testurself test series and also I am a part of FindMyTest as an expert panel. At the end, I checked my preparation with the help of mock tests whereas in between I made lot of questions for FindMyTest which helped me to think a little bit higher while making the questions and solving the doubts of people.
AskMeMetallurgy: What is your style of preparation and notes making?
Vinith: Generally during watching lectures i make a lot of notes like i include each and every point by analysing what is the actual meaning of the presenter presenting . My memory is strong so, i didnt made any formula book for GATE.
Previous Year Papers
AskMeMetallurgy: Does solving previous year question help aspirants? At what stage of preparation, Aspirants should start to solve previous year papers? What style did you follow for solving these papes?
Vinith: Yes, previous year papers are a must for GATE preparation. before starting the preparation of GATE aspirants must see the previous years for analysing what to study and upto what extent one has to cover that topic depending on their level of understanding. I solved the papers at the end because i was already used to it.
AskMeMetallurgy: What was your daily schedule like during preparation?
Vinith: Due to my busy schedule of mtech, i dedicated around 8 hours a day for GATE exam at the end. i gave 1 mock test a day which i completed around it in 2-2.5 hours then i revised my notes and solved previous year papers.
AskMeMetallurgy: What was your time management strategy in the real GATE exam?
Vinith: This year paper contains jumbling of 1 mark and 2 mark questions. so, i started with aptitude part and then started solving easy questions so, in this way i completed my paper within 2 hours and at last hour i solved some conceptual questions which helped me to get some 10-12 marks more.
