GATE 2021 examination was conducted by IIT Bombay in February 2021. Arkoprabho Roy secured AIR-6 in MT paper. He is pursuing B-Tech in Material Science & Metallurgical Engineering from BIT, Sindri. This was his first attempt. Achieving Top rank in the GATE examination is no small feat and needed much of hard work and preparation strategy. The future Aspirants can take much of learning from GATE 2021 MT Topper Arkoprabho Roy. Here is an awesome interview with him.
AskMeMetallurgy: Please, accept our heartiest congratulations on your splendid success. First of all, we would like to know about Arkoprabho. Please introduce yourself.
Arkoprabho: I am Arkoprabho Roy , currently 7th semester Metallurgical engineering student at BIT Sindri
AskMeMetallurgy: What rank did you get in GATE 2021? What is your GATE score and how many marks did you secure?
Arkoprabho: 6th,My score was 894,I secured 85.67 marks
AskMeMetallurgy: Is this your first attempt or did you attempt GATE earlier?
Arkoprabho: Yes, this is my first attempt for GATE.
AskMeMetallurgy: How was the GATE 2021 MT paper?
Arkoprabho: Most of the part was Easy, with at most 10 tricky questions overall.
AskMeMetallurgy: when did you start preparation for GATE 2021?
Arkoprabho: January 2020,First I gave a thorough reading and tried to understand every concepts from the standard books,And then Made short notes in the subsequent readings. Always remember to make micro notes at the end(Formula book handwritten).
AskMeMetallurgy: Have you taken any coaching or Online Mock Tests?
AskMeMetallurgy: Do you think test series help to boost the preparation?
AskMeMetallurgy: What is your style of preparation and notes making?
Arkoprabho: I used some Nptel lectures as the source of note making and write down every important concepts given in the book , especially for mechanical metallurgy ,follow Dieter (According to syllabus )and raise questions on why and how a particular phenomenon takes place ,try to answer it yourself using various references , and give special efforts in solving numericals.
Previous Year Papers
AskMeMetallurgy: Does solving previous year question help aspirants? At what stage of preparation, Aspirants should start to solve previous year papers? What style did you follow for solving these papes?
Arkoprabho: Yes ,At least solve the previous years papers two times before Gate ,That will help in revision of concepts and memorising Formula. In the initial days of preparation ,solve the previous year book subjectwise ,then during the last months of preparation , attempt the previous year papers as if you are giving the original Gate exam.Time management and memorising Formula is the key for Success in Gate exam.
AskMeMetallurgy: What was your daily schedule like during preparation?
Arkoprabho: Give at least 60 percent of your study time in practicing questions
AskMeMetallurgy: What was your time management strategy in the real GATE exam?
Arkoprabho: Always attempt the paper in two stages ,In the First stage solve those questions which will take less than 1minute or the questions you are familiar with,In the second stage Attempt those questions which are either too lengthy (more than 3 minutes time taking) or those questions which are quite unconventional ,and I had completed the paper in about 2 and a half hours and was remaining with 30 minutes for revision in the real Gate Exam
Books For GATE MT
AskMeMetallurgy: Which books did you follow for GATE preparation? Pls name some very important must read books for GATE.
Arkoprabho: All the standard books i suggest.
- Mechanical metallurgy-Dieter
- Physical metallurgy-V Raghvan, Dr Rajesh Prasad sir Nptel lectures
- Thermodynamics -Bs Murty sir Nptel lectures
- Gaskell ,GS Upadhyay (only numericals)
- Iron and steel making -Ahindra Ghosh,AB lele(for numericals)
- Material Characterisation -Yang Leng
- Corrosion -FONTANA,Callol Mondol sir Nptel lectures
Suggestion for Aspirants
AskMeMetallurgy: What is the important topic that should be specially focused by the GATE Aspirants?
Arkoprabho: Solve numericals and questions as much as possible from various sources like Nptel assignment, Standard books ,test series etc
AskMeMetallurgy: Please suggest some Do’s and Dont’s for the GATE aspirants during preparation.
Arkoprabho: At least solve 100 questions daily if someone wants to improve his /her accuracy and always remember Gate is all About concepts and formula ,Do study but someone need not do PhD on that topic ,Gate tests the fundamentals of engineering and how one is able to apply the concepts and formula in a given time frame. But one more thing ,purpose of study must not only to clear Gate ,but to have all the sufficient knowledge a Btech Metallurgical engineering student must process, that’s the main purpose of education ,which has no relation with any such exam.
AskMeMetallurgy: What are you planning for your career after GATE 2021?
Arkoprabho: Masters at IISC Bangalore / join any Research and development based organization.
AskMeMetallurgy: What is your opinion/feedback about the Askmemetallurgy website?
Arkoprabho: Askmemetallurgy is a good website for Gate aspirants.
Thanks Arkoprabho for such an awesome Interview. We wish you an amazing career and a healthy life ahead.
