GATE 2022 examination was conducted by IIT Kharagpur in February 2022. Mohit Patidar secured AIR-1 in MT paper. Achieving Top rank in the GATE examination is no small feat and needed much of hard work and preparation strategy. The future Aspirants can take much of learning from GATE 2022 MT Topper Mohit Patidar. Here is an awesome interview with him.
AskMeMetallurgy: Please, accept our heartiest congratulations on your splendid success. First of all, we would like to know about Mohit. Please introduce yourself.
Mohit: I am Mohit Patidar. I am 2020 pass-out from NIT Srinagar.
AskMeMetallurgy: What rank did you get in GATE 2022? What is your GATE score and how many marks did you secure?
Mohit: I got AIR-1 at 80.67 marks and 952 score.

AskMeMetallurgy: Is this your first attempt or did you attempt GATE earlier?
Mohit: This is my third attempt. I gave first attempt in 2020 and got 589 rank. In second attempt, i got AIR- 145 and now in 2022, I secured AIR-1.
AskMeMetallurgy: How was the GATE 2022 MT paper?
Mohit: It was relatively tough than last year because of the MSQs which were asked for the first time. Some NATs were tricky as well.
Preparation Strategy
AskMeMetallurgy: when did you start preparation for GATE 2022?
Mohit: I had started my preparation from last two months because I had already attempted GATE earlier.
AskMeMetallurgy: What is your style of preparation and notes making?
Mohit: My target is to solve as much questions as I can so as to improve my conceptual clarity and speed. For making notes, I had watched NPTEL lectures and read relevant textbooks.
AskMeMetallurgy: How did you make your rank better and best? What did you learn from your previous attempt?
Mohit: Thermo was my weak so I solved thermodynamics problems from BS upadhyay & RK Dubey and Gaskell. I had solved aptitude questions from Made Easy and attempted test series, example of books and previous year papers.
Previous Year Papers
AskMeMetallurgy: What stage of preparation, Aspirants should start to solve previous year papers? What style did you follow for solving these papers?
Mohit: Solving previous year questions is very much necessary as it give you idea about the type of the questions are being asked. If you have completed any subject then immediately solve previous year questions of that subject. If you are lacking in any concept then read it again from book or watch NPTEL lecture for it.

AskMeMetallurgy: Which NPTEL lectured have you watched to gear up your preparation?
Mohit: I have watched:
- Thermodynamics from BS Murthy
- Corrosion from K Mondal
- Physical Metallurgy from Rajesh prasad and
- Some topic wise lectures in which my basic was not clear.
Time Management
AskMeMetallurgy: What was your daily schedule like during preparation?
Mohit: My schedule was quite flexible. In morning and noon, I used to solve questions. In evening and before-bed, I used to revise my notes. Taking proper breaks in between is advisable.
AskMeMetallurgy: What was your time management strategy in the real GATE exam?
Mohit: My question solving speed was good. I used to give enough time in reading a question so as to avoid any silly mistake. I first attempted technical portion and then jumped to aptitude section. First solve the questions in which you are sure and leave the lengthy questions for later.

AskMeMetallurgy: Which books did you follow for GATE preparation? Pls name some very important must read books for GATE.
Mohit: Standard books should be followed:
- Mechanical metallurgy and Metal Forming- Dieter,
- Callister’s Materials Science and Engineering
- Thermodynamics- Gaskell, BS upadhyay & RK Dubey
- NPTEL Lectures
Suggestion for Aspirants
AskMeMetallurgy: What is the important topic that should be specially focused by the GATE Aspirants?
Mohit: Analyze Previous Year papers and prepare accordingly.
AskMeMetallurgy: Please suggest some Do’s and Dont’s for the GATE aspirants during preparation.
Mohit: Do’s:- Be familiar with gate calculator, solve previous year question, attempting test-series, make notes while watching NPTEL lectures
Don’ts:- Don’t kill your time studying everything you find. Stick to the syllabus.
After GATE?
AskMeMetallurgy: What are you planning for your career after GATE 2022?
Mohit: Aiming for BARC,IOCL,NALCO,SAIL etc.
