I answered similar question. In that I gave reason for why we need AOD and VOD. In this I try to answer EAF stainless steel making. Yes it possible to make stainless steel in EAF. Let’s how? Initially we made melt which contain high carbon, Cr, Ni. Why because these are the main alloying elements in stainless steel. And It is possible to blow oxygen from top in EAF. Now our aim is to remove carbon preferentially without oxidising Cr and Ni. So how to do it? In EAF it is only possible at high temperature. Around 1800°C, if you see Ellingham diagram Cr – Cr2O3 line is positioned top of C- CO line. That means, at that temperature if Cr2O3 form also it is not stable. Carbon will take the oxygen from Cr2O3. That carbon goes out the system in the form of CO gas. In this way we can make stainless steel . But this process is not followed. Because this much high temperature damage the refractory lining. That’s why we are going to another route that is by lowering the partial pressure removing the carbon.
