      Hardness is the resistance to local plastic deformation in the material that can be due to application of some force , indentation or abrasion. Think like if you apply some force to material how much will it be able to sustain this without deforming in that localised area.

      Now hardenability  is the property of steel which determines the depth and distribution of hardness during quenching or you can say it is the depth on hardening when we quench a sample.

      Now for example. You have 2 steel sample 1) 100% Martensite upto center- this will have low surface hardness but high hardenability.

      2) 100% Martensite near surface only – this will have high surface hardness but low hardenability.

      Hardness is the resistance to plastic deformation . Hardenability is the ability to form nartensite. Fine grains are more grain boundaries as compare to coarse grains.       Hardness is the resistance to plastic deformation . Hardenability is the ability to form nartensite. Fine grains are more grain boundaries as compare to coarse grains. So more gb means more dislocation pile up which results in the strengthening effect and which increases the hardness. But hardenability is more in the coarse grain as compare to fine grain. Because fine grains have more gb and that acts as a nucleation sites for pearlite. So it suppresses the martensite formation which decreases the hardenability.
