Phosphorus availability decreased with increase in pH.Â
Phosphorus binds to calcium leaving less free phosphate ions available in solution.
So, increase % P results Basicity of iron.
In acidic soils phosphorus tends to react with aluminum, iron and manganese, while in alkaline soils the dominant fixation is with calcium.

Presence of Phosphorous don’t increase the basicity of iron. Basically, basicity increases by adding limestone or dolomite which is used to hold the phosphorus in slag by forming complex compound i.e.,CaO.P2O5
Phosphorus removal conditions are:-
1. High basicity
2. Low temperature
3. Oxidizing atmosphere
4. High fluidity
5. 15-18% FeO must be present in the slag
If it's not increase then why iron >0.05% p is said to be basic (or thomas grade iron)
