Why do we use dolomite during slag splashing? It has a lot of CaO content in it, but we just worried about the MgO content, so can there be an alternative for dolomite?

      I will answer step by step. So our first question is why we need to do slag splashing? Basically it is done to improve refractory lining .       I will answer step by step. So our first question is why we need to do slag splashing? Basically it is done to improve refractory lining . Usually the refractory lining life is around 1000 heats. If we did slag splashing the lining life go above 2000 heats. In this process, the left out slag in LD process, we have to maintain composition such that 13% Feo and 8% MgO. So, why we need to Feo and MgO? Both are improving the fluidity of the slag compare to CaO. we need good fluidity to form uniform coating through out converter. Then MgO has higher melting temperature compare to CaO. That’s why we are concern about MgO. After maintaining the required composition, the N2 gas is passed from the top qt high speed. Then the slag thrown towards the refractory lining such that coated evenly.
